Have you ever been around someone who never smiles, complains all the time, never seems to experience a good day, is grumpy, and always sees “the glass as half empty”? When you try to have a conversation with someone like this, do you try to get him to see the optimistic side of life as opposed to the pessimistic? When you see this person coming, do you try to avoid him? Well, who wouldn’t because if you don’t, you could end up having a bad day! It’s not a nice thing to “run away” from people, but you do have the right to protect your peace and sanity. However, don’t forget to pray for them because they obviously are in dire need of it if they always appear as if they have been “baptized in lemon juice”! When you get an opportunity to talk to them, try to tell a joke or two to make them laugh. Proverbs 15:15 (ESV) asserts: “All the days of the afflicted are evil, but the cheerful of heart has a continual feast.” Therefore, your advice to them needs to be, “Take a load off and have some fun!”
One thing that you will find out about me is that I love to laugh and have fun. It makes me feel wonderful! Our world is in such a stressful state sometimes that it becomes a challenge for some people to rejoice and be glad. It took me years to get to this point, but even amidst any trials I have experienced, I have learned to find joy. I find so much joy in praising God and having a laugh or two with family and friends. Just take a good look at children, some of the happiest beings on this earth. They laugh at things that may not seem funny to us adults, but at least they are having fun. They can light up a room with so much joy if you pay close attention to them. Ecclesiastes 3:4 (ESV) declares there is, “A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” Even in grief, there is a time to laugh. Think about the fond memories of the deceased, especially those that were filled with humor and endless fun. So that should at least bring a smile to your face.
