State and local officials are investigating a fatal hit and run that occurred near Green Pond last week, but details on the suspect who struck and killed a man are very limited.

“Everything about unit 2 (the vehicle) is unknown at this time due to it leaving the scene,” said Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell with the S.C. Highway Patrol. According to Tidwell, officials believe the fatal hit-and-run happened some time on Sept. 21, but the victim was not found until Sept. 22nd, when someone spotted his body laying in the grassy media along ACE Basin Highway.

The incident occurred on U.S. Highway 17 near Green Pond, along the 13000 block of ACE Basin Parkway. This is the half-way point between Jacksonboro and Green Pond.

“A motorist notified 911 and remained on scene. Fire-Rescue units stationed in Green Pond arrived minutes later and found the man was deceased,” said Colleton County Fire-Rescue Director Barry McRoy. “Evidence at the scene indicated he may have been struck by a yellow car,” he said.

The SCHP and its Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation (MATE) Team is investigating the collision.

“As more information becomes available, it will be released,” said Tidwell. Anyone with information about this hit-and-run death should contact the S.C. Highway Patrol.
