A 48-year-old Summerville man died in a single-car crash on August 12th on Cottageville Highway.
According to Cpl. Matt Suthern, with the S.C. Highway Patrol, the deceased was the only person in the vehicle when the crash occurred. The unidentified driver was near the 12000 block of Cottageville Highway, just north of the Cottageville Town Limit, at 12:30 p.m. when he left the roadway and overcorrected, hitting a tree. The man was not wearing a seat belt, according to Suthern.
The man was unconscious when firefighter-paramedics arrived on scene.
According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, firefighter-paramedics began treating the man while other crew members used Holmatro Rescue tools to free the man from the crushed car.
“He was in critical condition, so a medical helicopter responded and landed in the field in front of Cottageville Elementary School a couple of miles from the accident scene,” said McRoy.
“He was transported by Fire-Rescue Medic 9 to meet with the CARE Flight helicopter.”
The man was flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, where he later died from his injuries, said Suthern.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
