St. Paul’s Parish recently completed their first season participating in Little League for boys and girls ages 4-12. In a press release dated June 27, St. Paul’s Parish stated that they had recruited more than 90 athletes from Edisto Island, Adams Run, Hollywood, Ravenel and Meggett. The players participated in their final regular season game Saturday, July 10 at Petersfield Road Field in Hollywood.
“I think my old-fashion approach of going door-to-door, meeting the parents and the kids in their homes made the difference in recruiting in these rural communities,” said Coach Tommy Bowens of Hollywood. “Sometimes you have to meet them where they are instead of waiting for them to come to you.”
“I remain very excited about the new St. Paul’s Parish Little League because it brings much needed additional recreational opportunities for the youth of Ravenel as well as all areas of St. Paul’s Parish,” said Steve Tumbleston, mayor of the Town of Ravenel.
“Sponsorship, charter application and related funding were provided by Edisto Island Youth Recreation, a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives and futures of young people in these underserved Lowcountry areas,” said Bowens. “In addition to offering kids in the area a chance to play baseball and softball, the charter with Little League International will give young people the opportunity to compete not only within SC districts, but for SE Regional Championships and ultimately, the Little League World Series.”
Founded in 1939, Little League International is the world’s largest and oldest youth organization operating in 80 countries with millions of players.
