Squatters who have been living inside a vacant Walterboro business are the suspects in a fire that started at 87 Acorn Road in Walterboro on Sunday, May 15th.

This is the second time that this same building has caught fire in two months.

According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, fire crews arrived and found the building “well-involved,” with flames coming from the front of the building.

The rear of the building and the roof of the building were also destroyed.

The fire spread to the roof of the nearby Budget Inn, which was also on fire.

Because of the size of the fire, fire trucks with the Walterboro Police Department were also called to the scene to help fight the two fires. “The building received heavy damage in that incident and has been condemned by the county’s Building Department,” said McRoy.

This is the second time in two months that this vacant commercial building has caught fire. The first time was on March 30th.

No injuries were reported in the fire. The fire is under investigation.
