This week’s personal spotlight is on Jocelyn Beliveau, the Executive Assistant at the Colleton County Chamber of Commerce. Jocelyn was born and raised in Walterboro. She is the daughter of Michelle and Jimmy Beliveau. She has two siblings, Sierra Jordan and Alex Wallace. Jocelyn graduated from Colleton County High School in 2021. She liked to participate in the performing arts. “In my sophomore year, we did Shrek, the musical. I helped out. I wasn't part of the class. I just kind of did it during my free time helping assist with backstage and props. My junior year, we were going to do Mamma Mia, but that ended up being the following year, because of Covid. I helped design the set for that. I wasn't able to join it the following year because I was doing online my senior year, but I did go and watch it. I didn't do too much extracurriculars in high school. I was more focused on my schoolwork and trying to get myself situated with my college life.” She attended the University of South Carolina Beaufort earned a bachelor's degree in studio art. She says, “I lived in Beaufort for four years on the campus. It's apartment style, so that was even better. I had amazing professors. They helped me learn more about being an artist and how to get myself out there. I feel like I've learned a lot at USCB, and I can see a growth from when I started and how my work progressed throughout my four years.”
Jocelyn enjoys gaming, particularly Stardew Valley and Fortnite. She explains, “I do a lot of single player and multiplayer based games. I will play with my dad, or I'll play with my friends, or sometimes I'll just play a single player game." She would like to continue her career and work in the video game industry, “I would like to be at either an animation studio or a gaming studio such as Epic Games who made Fortnite. They have a studio in North Carolina that I would really want to try and get a job with. If that does not work out, I want to try and be an art teacher. I do need to get my teaching certification for that, but I would like to look into different counties around here that are hiring for an art teacher.
Jocelyn is now with the Colleton County Chamber of Commerce. After answering a Facebook ad she was excited to be hired as the executive assistant. She assists with event scheduling, member communications, and website maintenance. She says, “I've been helping Dr. Christa Massey with scheduling events, emails, organization, and calling our members.” She also helps plan chamber events such as Coffee with Colleagues and the Business After Hours. One of the more exciting jobs is helping organize ribbon cuttings.
When asked what she would like to be doing an a few years, she said, “I think I just really want to continue with my art and keep growing and be a character designer. My end goal is to design different characters that you would see in a cartoon movie or comic books. The studios have people who make concepts of these characters, and then they finalize it before they send it off to the director, or producer.” She is trying to hone her skills to be competitive in the graphics market.
Jocelyn emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive outlook and focusing on goals for the youth of Walterboro. She explains, “I think that if people want to keep growing, they have to put in the effort and the time and keep a good focus. It's okay to have fun, but sometimes we need to stay focused on our goals.”
