This week, we shine a light on Howard J. Nettles, a dedicated professional making significant strides in the healthcare sector as the Director of Community Outreach and Engagement for Genesis Healthcare.
Howard hails from Effingham, South Carolina, a small town just outside Florence. Raised by Homer J. and Patricia Nettles, Howard is the middle child in a family of three. From a young age, he was actively involved in various school activities, particularly enjoying his time in various choirs. His enthusiasm for learning led him to graduate early and pursue higher education at Frances Marion College, where he became an active member of the student body, especially the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, where he eventually became President.
Before joining Genesis Healthcare, Howard built a diverse career across different fields. He began in communications as a regional manager for United States Cellular and later transitioned to banking, working in the loan fulfillment department at Washington Mutual, which eventually became JP Morgan Chase. His meticulous attention to detail and organizational skills have been evident throughout his career.
Howard’s journey with Genesis Healthcare began unexpectedly during a visit to one of their facilities with a family member, where his care for a loved one and attention to detail caught the eye of the Chief Medical Director, eventually leading to his hiring as the pharmacy business manager.
When asked about his aspirations if money and time were no object, Howard revealed his love for travel. He and his spouse of 37 years have visited many places but admits that among his favorite are Alaska, England, Ireland, Italy and Spain. Other much loved trips include France, Morocco, Portugal, Gibraltar, and several Caribbean Islands. Upcoming travel plans include Asia, Africa, and Antarctica, reflecting his curiosity and enthusiasm for exploring other countries, their cultures and meeting new people.
Howard has also embraced his role in the community with genuine warmth. He finds great satisfaction in meeting people who have benefited from Genesis Healthcare’s services, particularly when they share how his outreach on behalf of Genesis has made a difference in their lives. The ability to provide healthcare to those in need, helping them avoid the difficult choice between paying bills and getting medical care, is a source of immense pride and joy for him. He also enjoys when he comes to Walterboro, people now greet him with a smile, handshake, or a wave calling him by name and asking how he is doing.
Howard exemplifies dedication both in his professional role at Genesis Healthcare and in his personal pursuits. His journey from a small-town upbringing to a highly visible role in local healthcare outreach showcases a commitment to service and a passion for making a tangible impact in the community. Through his work he has been able make lasting partnerships with community organizations such Colleton County School District and USC Salkehatchie. His work not only helps individuals access essential healthcare but also enriches his own life through the joy of connecting with others.
