Speed found guilty for killing man during argument

A Hampton County man has been sentenced to prison for shooting and killing another man after the argued in a yard.

Faizon S. Speed, 19, of Hampton, pleaded guilty on Monday, Feb. 28th in General Sessions Court to voluntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Speed’s guilty plea comes after he shot and killed 37-year-old Robert Lee Haynes, Jr.

After his guilty plea, Speed was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

“Mr. Speed was armed and was looking for a confrontation,” said Fourteenth Circuit Deputy Solicitor Sean Thornton, who prosecuted the case against Speed. “He settled a score by repeatedly firing his gun and striking the victim,” said Thornton, in a press release.

According to information provided by the solicitor’s office, Haynes drove to his girlfriend’s house in Varnville on May 3, 2020. Once there, he found Speed and his girlfriend’s son in the yard. The two argued, and Speed fired several rounds at the victim, who died the same day at a nearby hospital.
