Using technology to keep some academic traditions alive, the Colleton County School District used a virtual online test earlier this month to hold a districtwide Spelling Bee.

The test was given on Tuesday Feb. 9.

Prior to this test, all Colleton County elementary schools and the Colleton County Middle School held their own respective spelling bees throughout the Fall of 2020. The winners from those individual schools then competed in the District Spelling Bee, on Feb. 9.

During the District Spelling Bee, the best overall speller took the win – Gracie Pearson of Northside Elementary. Pearson took the win after first tying with Petyon Nettles, of Forest Hills Elementary. Pearson then won the overall spelling bee during a tie-breaker test, held on Feb. 16.

“We would like to congratulate each of our school winners!” said Sean Gruber, coordinator of Communications and spokesman for the Colleton County School District.

“Miss Pearson will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held on March 25, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. and is hosted by The Post and Courier Newspaper.”

According to Gruber, the location of the spelling bee will be announced at a later date.
“Again, we would like to congratulate all of our school winners and our district winner!” he said.
