Situation Normal…and All Fouled Up

Are you reading the Bible through with me? Grab your pen and journal, and get ready to write your thoughts as you journey through the Bible.

Welcome to Deuteronomy! This is the fifth book of Moses and the word Deuteronomy means “second law” or “repeated law”. Today, read Deuteronomy 1-3.

The Israelites had been stuck in the wilderness going from place to place for 40 years. Now they were at Mt. Horeb where God was giving the people a message through Moses. It was time to go into the Promised Land.

Horeb means “desolate” or “ruins”. It’s what the peoples’ lives had been like for 40 years, all because they didn’t obey the Lord. He had told them to go into the Promised Land and take it for their very own, but they were afraid and didn’t trust God to take care of them and help them defeat the enemy. So God waited 40 years for those who voted against moving into the Promised Land were dead. Now it was time to go.

Sometimes we can stay in a place, situation or even a sin that becomes normal to us even if it causes desolation or ruin to our lives. We settle into a comfort zone and miss out on the promises of God and the blessings He wants to give us.

How can we change that?

Spend time in God’s word. Trust Him to take care of us if we are faithful. Be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit and resolve to obey Him even when we don’t fully understand what or where God has called us.

Trust plus obedience always equals abundant life (John 10:10).

Don’t settle for ordinary when God has called you to be extraordinary.

In your journal write what fears you have that have caused you to not fully enjoy God’s abundant life. Write a promise to God that you will overcome those fears and trust Him to carry you through to experience all He wants to give and do for you.

PRAY: God of abundance and blessings, I don’t want to settle for routine or ordinary life. Strengthen my faith through trial and testing until I am content to trust You in every situation. I know that You are always faithful, and when I faithfully trust and obey, You provide abundant life through the Lord Jesus. Thank You for that gift.
