A single vehicle accident on Interstate 95 claimed one life Wednesday morning June 18th. At 02:45 am, a Florida couple traveling north on I-95 witnessed a Honda passenger car leave the roadway at a high rate of speed and strike a tree. The small vehicle received massive damage with the tree entering the car as far as the rear seats. The driver was heavily entrapped in the wreckage. The motorists stopped and notified 9-1-1, then made attempts to pull the driver from the car. The vehicle caught fire while they were attempting to remove the driver. A Sheriff’s Deputy was in the area and arrived quickly. He ran to the burning car and assisted the others in trying to remove the victim until the flames drove them away from the car. The accident occurred in a remote rural area approximately eight miles south of Walterboro. Firefighter-Paramedics arrived about nine minutes later to find the vehicle fully involved. The driver, who is believed to be an 18-year-old Florida teenager, was deceased and heavily entrapped in the wreckage. The Coroner’s Office transported the patient. Units were on the scene for approx. two and half hours. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
