Walterboro Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. recently awarded its annual scholarship, in the amount of $500, to Ian Shark, a 2021 graduate of Colleton County High School.

Shark is the son of Charles and Cassandra Shark of Walterboro, and currently enrolled at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He plans to major in business management with a minor in entrepreneurship.

During his high school years Shark was a member of the football team, the Young Men of Hope, and the Cougars Men of Distinction. He excelled as a leader in all of these extracurricular activities. Prior to his graduation, he signed for an athletic scholarship to play college football at South Carolina State University.

Shark has also been active in his community. He was a member of the Christian Youth Fellowship through the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and he was a Boy Scout, ultimately reaching the level of an Eagle Scout.

Shark was highly recommended as the recipient of this scholarship. One of his instructors, who was also his Scout Master said, “He has spent countless hours doing community service, not just for the hours, but to help others in need. His manners and mannerisms are second to none.” His Pastor shared, “Ian Shark has served faithfully in the church with me since my arrival six years ago in the capacity of our drummer. Ian has participated in the distribution of meals and has assisted the Trustee Board as needed.”

Herman G. Bright is the scholarship chairperson, and the president is Art Williams. According to the fraternity’s website, “Through its worldwide prominence, Kappa Alpha Psi® has had a global impact on events which affect our local communities as well as places around the globe.

Local chapters of Kappa Alpha Psi® participate in community outreach activities to feed the homeless, provide scholarships to young people matriculating to college, serve as mentors to young men, participate in blood drives and serve as hosts of seminars for public health awareness, to name a few. Nationally, Kappa Alpha Psi ® has provided summer enrichment camps and provided funds for St. Jude Medical Research Center to assist in the fight against childhood catastrophic diseases by raising more than $1 Million. Internationally, Kappa Alpha Psi® members have answered the call to service by proudly serving our military in wars since WWI and raising funds to assist those in need following natural disasters around the world, including hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons and earthquakes.”
