Sergeant Bobby Lee Varn

Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Sergeant Bobby Lee Varn. He was born in Colleton County, South Carolina to the late Mr. Bradley Varn, Jr. and Mrs. Lilla Capers Varn. He was reared in the home of his grandparents, the late Mr. Leon Capers and Mrs. Ella Mole Capers. He was also the grandson of the late Mr. Bradley Varn, Sr., and Mrs. Beulah Varn.
Bobby was educated in the public schools of Colleton County and was a graduate of Ruffin High School. He became an employee of the JP Stevens & Co.
Bobby began the highlight of his impeccable military career when he enlisted into the United States Army on July 13, 1970. During his army tenure he earned many awards and medals for his outstanding service to his country. He served in the Vietnam War and was notably recognized for his oversees service, combat infantry, national defense service and the Vietnam campaign Medal. He was stationed in various parts of the world including Indochina, Korea, the Netherlands, Texas, and North Carolina to name a few. Simultaneously, he also served and retired from the Army National Guard after serving ten years from 1979-1989. After forty years of dedicated and devoted service to his country, Sgt. Varn retired gracefully from the United States Army on October 28, 2010.
His career didn’t end after retirement from the United States Army and the Army National Guard. He continued to serve and became an officer with the Walterboro, South Carolina police force. His long lasting and prominent career led him to become employed with the Navy Weapon Station, Charleston, South Carolina where he served as a policeman. After many dedicated years of service, he once again retired.
He was married to the former Patricia Yates for over thirty-five years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Bradley Varn, Jr. and Mrs. Lilla Capers Varn, Grandparents, Mr. Leon Capers and Mrs. Ella Mole Capers, and Mr. Bradley Varn, Sr., and Mrs. Beulah Varn, Brother, Mack Varn, Sister, Grace Johnson, Uncles, Tommy Capers, Rickey Capers, and Cecil Capers, Aunt, Betty Gillyard, and Father-in-law, Paul Yates.
He was welcomed into his eternal home on January 18, 2020 at the age of 69.
Left to celebrate his legacy is his wife, Patricia Varn of the home; children, Melika (Pastor Rubin) Jackson of Norway, South Carolina, Melissa Colley of Charlotte, North Carolina, Javon Varn (Esha Black) of Ruffin, South Carolina, Theodore Antoine Colley of Orlando, Florida, and Bobby Tyshawn Varn (Amber Brown) of Ruffin, South Carolina; Grandchildren, A’Dashia (Rishawn) Dunbar, A’Deija Slater, Sydni Wiggan, Ke’Andre Varn, Kamaria Varn, Kingston Varn, Kashton Varn, Cameron Floyd, and Kyra Varn; Great grandchildren, Micaiah Slater, Malia Slater, Landen Dunbar and Madelyn Dunbar; Brothers, Cleveland (Mary) Varn of Islandton, South Carolina, and Gerald Varn of Springtown, South Carolina; Sister, Marcy Washington of Walterboro, South Carolina; Reared as Brothers, Ronnie “Pete” (Norma) Capers of Hampton, South Carolina, and Rodney Capers of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Uncles, Carlisle Varn of Brooklyn, New York and Herman (Patsy) Capers of ______________; Special Uncle, Luther “Sonny” Capers; Aunts, Ellen Capers Carolina, Mary Capers, Angela Capers and Joann Capers; Great Aunts, Luetta Mitchell and Irene Middleton both of Tampa, Florida; Mother in law, Mildred Yates; Brothers in law, Freddie (Isabell) Yates, Paul (Catherine) Yates, Frederick Yates, and Jonathan Yates; Sisters in law, Sandra (J.B.)
