PRESS RELEASE - The last-minute departure of USC Salkehatchie’s basketball coach has necessitated the difficult decision not to field a 2022 - 23 team. Athletic Director Jeremey Joye has announced that USC Salkehatchie will use the 2022 – 23 men’s basketball season to recruit and rebuild the program.
USC Salkehatchie has a record of success not only in its men’s basketball program but also with its women’s basketball and women’s softball programs which have won multiple NJCAA Region 10 titles and advanced to national tournaments.
“With success, coaches have the opportunity to advance their careers,” Joye said. “While we are happy to play the role of a springboard for our coaches, that often leaves us with vacancies that need to be filled.”
Richard Grant left the Salkehatchie program to take an assistant coaching position at Bethune-Cookman University, a NCAA Division I program.
Dean April Cone said that Salkehatchie will use this time to hire a coach that fits USC Salkehatchie and who will commit to excellence both on and off the court.
“We remain excited about the future of USC Salkehatchie athletics and feel we are well positioned to continue our tradition of success. We are working diligently to hire coaches who are focused on developing students not only as athletes but who are also prepared to succeed in the classroom and in life,” said Cone, who began her role on July 1.
“We are moving forward in a thoughtful, transparent way with a strategic search for a coach who shares our commitment to academics and athletics. We continue to support the affected players as they make decisions about the fall semester by providing resources and guidance to make the choices that are most appropriate for them.”
Fans of the Salk Nation can continue to support the program by cheering on Salkehatchie this year.
“We have exciting things happening. Not only are we fielding teams in women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball and soccer, we are also welcoming new coaches Dani Aquino (volleyball), George Dukes (women’s basketball), and Chip Wiggins (women’s soccer) who are passionate about Salkehatchie and are anticipating successful seasons. We appreciate our fans and are grateful for their continued support,” Cone said.
