Salkehatchie earns first Region X win

The Salkehatchie Indian Baseball team went 1-3 last weekend, earning their first Region X win of the season against USC Lancaster on the road. The Indians fell 7-1 and 10-5 in the double header played Friday April 15. Their first conference win of the season came the following day in a 10-4 decision when Cameron Godbee drove in four runs on a grand slam in the seventh inning.

The Indians lost the final game of series 4-3 later in the day.

In game one the Indians watched the game slip away early and could not recover. Ahmad Tucker led things off on the hill for Salkehatchie lasting four and two-thirds innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs while walking one. Michael Dorso and Nate Kiser entered the game from the bullpen, throwing one inning and one-third of an inning respectively. Rushton Bowles led the Indians at the plate, going 2-3.

Kenny Miller took the loss in game two, allowing eight runs on five hits and striking out two. Donovan Parker threw two and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen. Jason Wilson went 2-3 at the plate to lead the Indians.

The Indians secured Saturday’s win following a huge seventh inning where Cameron Godbee drove in four runs on a grand slam. Caleb Shealy and Gavin Phillips recorded RBIs in the inning. Will McGurie had an RBI single in the first inning. The Indians collected 15 hits on the day, with Godbee, Shealy, Luis Quiñones, and McGuire each having multiple hits.

In a 4-3 heartbreaker in game four of the series, the Indians came from behind and threatened when Luis Quiñones and Caleb Shealy came through with RBIs. Salkehatchie recorded eight hits in the game, with Shealy and Quiñones (homerun) having multiple hits. Nate Kiser earned the start and went on to surrendered four runs on nine hits over six innings, striking out four and walking zero.

The Indians (2-39, 1-17) have a four-game conference series against USC Sumter on April 23-24 on the road. The Region X Tournament is scheduled to begin May 6-10 in Lexington.
