A 55-year-old Ruffin man died from injuries received in a single car wreck in the 300 block of Sunrise Road in Smoaks on Thursday afternoon Jan. 30.

At 12:17 p.m., 9-1-1 was notified that a red Ford pickup left the roadway and struck several trees. The truck received heavy damage and the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Willie Lee Edwards, 55, was the only occupant in the truck and received multiple traumatic injuries.

Firefighter-paramedics stationed in Smoaks arrived minutes later and quickly began treating the man. He was rapidly removed from the heavily damaged truck and transported to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center. He was flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Hospital where he was rushed to surgery.

Unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
