Ruffin High Bonfire and Reunion

Posted

Alumni from Ruffiin High School held a class reunion and bonfire Saturday, October 19th. Graduation classes from as far back as 1959 set up tents and displays for their classmates. Over 300 people attended the event that included home cooked food and music. The event went well into the night on the campus of the old Ruffin High School.

The Lewis family purchased the high school property that includes the athletic fields and the buildings for the nonprofit Aspire2Inspire. Daniel Lewis talks about the reunion, “The alumni of Ruffin, annually have a bonfire. The class of ‘82 representative, Mr. Wiggins contacted us. He wanted to make sure that this was the biggest one yet. It’s a whole lot more people than it was last year. We wanted them to come out here and have a good time, because we know how much the school means to them. The goal of Aspire2Inspire is to come here, develop a community hub so kids adults that do not have access to internet, STEM and entrepreneurship. We’re actually in the works of having a community garden, so we’re really trying to foster a relationship with the community here so we can provide different events, different avenues of opportunity for people here in Ruffin and other counties.”

The school and its site is under review to be deemed a historical landmark and efforts are underway to restore the ball field and buildings to be a community center.

This is all in the future but the grounds were in great shape to bring the Ruffin High Alumni together to have fun, share great food, and relive their high school experiences.
