Rooted in Love

…so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, Ephesians 3:17-18

When you turn to Jesus and trust Him with your life, some things change. Your life has a different goal. You live by different values. You live by a completely different strength. Paul tells the believers that they are now “rooted and established in love.” Before Jesus saved my soul, I’m sure that selfishness was my goal. That’s what I was rooted in. Selfishness was my daily reason for living. As a Christian, Jesus plants the roots of my life deep in the nutrient rich soil of His love. I draw my identity, my worth, my strength, my wisdom from His love for me. His love for me becomes the foundation of my new life in Him. If you know much about plants, you know that the health of the root affects the quality of the fruit. In Jesus’ great love, my life started bearing a higher quality of fruit.

Paul goes on to encourage the believers “to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” These dimensions would give us the idea that Jesus’ love has a size, which leads us to ask, “how big is Jesus’ love?” The answer is big enough to make us a child of God, if we will come to Jesus on His terms. His love is big enough to forgive us of our wrongs, if we will repent and believe in Jesus. His love is big enough to transform our lives, if we will place our lives in His hands.
