WALTERBORO - Mr. James Allen Ritter, Jr., entered his heavenly home Thursday evening, January 19, 2023, at the Lowcountry Community Hospice House following and long and courageous battle with cancer. Born November 26, 1933 in Walterboro, South Carolina, he was a son of the late James A. Ritter, Sr., and Gladys Poitevint Ritter. He graduated from Walterboro High School in 1951 and was chosen as one of the speakers at the Class Commencement Program. Mr. Ritter retired from the Animal Health Division of the United States Department of Agriculture where he worked for twenty-eight years as a Livestock Inspector and later a Regulations Compliance Officer. Mr. Ritter served twenty-two years in the South Carolina Army National Guard and eight years in the United States Army Reserve where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a member of Green Pond Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon for countless years. Allen centered his life around his family and his service to God through his church. Surviving are: his wife of seventy-one years, Mrs. Sarah Fennell Ritter; two children; Debra R. Dodds and Jack A. Ritter; two grandchildren, Jessica Dodds Stone and Sarah Marie Ritter; and two great- grandchildren, Harris Marion Stone and Thomas Lawrence Stone. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Logan Dodds; and a brother who died in action during the Korean Conflict, Jackie Lee Ritter. The Relatives and Friends of Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs. J. Allen Ritter, Jr., are invited to attend his funeral service which will be conducted at 3 o’clock Monday afternoon, January 23, 2023, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend James W. Williams, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery, South Jefferies Boulevard, Walterboro.
