Beloved husband, father, and “Pop Pop,” Gene Rhodes passed away on March 17, 2025, at the age of 75 in Beaufort, South Carolina. Born and raised in Walterboro, he was the son of the late Rupert Eugene Rhodes, Sr. and Louise B. Rhodes. Gene was a proud graduate of Walterboro High School, Class of 1967, and went on to attend the Baptist College of Charleston. However, his education was put on hold when he was called to active duty with the Air Force Reserves. Throughout his career, he excelled in sales management within the plumbing industry in the Charleston area, where he built lifelong relationships. An avid golfer, Gene found joy on the greens of his favorite course, Dogwood Hills Country Club. A devoted Carolina Gamecock, he could be found most Saturdays in the fall cheering on his favorite football team. Gene was a devoted member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Walterboro and a proud member of the Elks Lodge, where he spent countless hours at the “round table” with his best friends, sharing laughter, stories, and memories — often with lively commentary, especially when it came to the Clemson Tigers. His playful banter was always in good fun and just another reflection of his contagious spirit. Above all, Gene was a family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Lynne, with whom he shared 51 wonderful years of marriage. He leaves behind his sons, Rupert Eugene (Trey) Rhodes III (Emily) and Michael D. Rhodes (Jessica), as well as his cherished grandsons, Bradley, Connor, and Grayson. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Lois Rhodes. He was predeceased by his brother, Denny Star Rhodes. Gene’s best friend, Charlie Chewning, will carry on their shared passion for Gamecock football, and his well-loved pets, Izzie and Cotton, will miss his presence. Those who knew Gene will never forget his sense of humor, his infectious laugh, and the joy he brought into every room. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In Gene’s honor, donations may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, FOCCAS, or a charity of choice.
