Fire-Rescue responded to a report of a single-car wreck at the intersection of Ritter and White Hall roads on Saturday evening Nov. 21 at 8:52 p.m., but responding units were unable to locate an accident at the reported location.
A search of the area revealed the accident was 1-1/2 miles south of the intersection in the 1500 block of White Hall Road. Fire-Rescue personnel found a Chevrolet Impala with heavy damage against an oak tree in a yard.
The tree crushed the car all the way to the firewall and the vehicle was on fire. Bystanders said someone pulled the man out of the car and transported him to the hospital by private car.
Firefighters extinguished the fire. A short time later, crews heard someone yelling in the woods across the street from the accident and found a second vehicle a substantial distance into the woods, not visible from the road.
The driver, who was related to the driver of the Impala, received non-life threatening injuries. He was evaluated by firefighter-paramedics at the scene, but denied transport to the hospital.
The driver of the Impala received critical injuries in the crash. He was stabilized at Colleton Medical Center, then flown by the C.A.R.E. Flight helicopter to the Trauma Center at Trident Hospital.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
