Reading Carnival thrills children

For children, going to the library is always fun, but it is even more delightful when a child can win prizes.

That’s the main focus of the Summer Reading Program at Colleton County Memorial Library.

The reading program offers prizes throughout the summer to children who read and participate in crafts and educational projects. The Summer Reading Program included a carnival, which happened on Friday on the front lawn of the local library. Hundreds of children, parents, and grandparents attended the event with the children playing carnival games and winning prizes. Colleton County Children’s Department Coordinator Shiela Keaise and a team of volunteers created a carnival-like atmosphere with popcorn, ice cream, ice pops, cookies, face painting, free books, toys and other prizes. This was all done in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of reading throughout the summer months.

Keaise, affectionally called “Miss Shiela,” said she is happy with Friday’s turnout, and grateful for all the helpers, donations and volunteers. “I think this may be the biggest crowd we have ever had,” she said. “We wanted to kick off our Summer Reading Program, get people here and registered, and hand out a lot of prizes. We hope everyone comes out for Summer Reading this year. There is something here for everyone and every age.”

The 2022 Donors for the Children’s Department’s Summer Reading Program include:
