Public input needed on school calendars for coming year

The Colleton County School District is again asking for the public’s input on how the school board and district leaders should mold the 2022-2023 traditional school calendar.

A survey is available on the school district’s Web site at www.colleton.k12.sc.us. All members of the public, including parents, students, teachers and community members, can take this survey. The results will be given to the school board for their consideration prior to any votes taken on the calendar.

There are two options available for the public to have input: one option is called “Sample A. and the other is called “Sample B.”

In Sample A, the first day of school for the coming school year (2022-2023) would be August 1t5th and the last day of school would be June 1st. There would be a fall break from Oct. 19-21, a teacher workday on Nov. 8th and a second fall break on Nov. 23-25.

Then, the traditional “holiday break” would be scheduled from Dec. 19th through Jan. 2nd.

Under the Sample A model, Spring Break would be held April 3 – April 7th.

With the second option, Sample B, students would return to school August 15th but their last day would be May 31st. In this model, students would have one day off in October, on Oct. 19th, with a day off on Nov. 8th and a fall break on Nov. 23-25th. The traditional holiday break would be held on Dec. 19th through Jan. 2nd. Another smaller break would be held on March 22 and Spring Break would be given to students from April 3 – April 7th.

The calendars are only different in when some holidays and make-up days are issued.

The survey about these calendars will stay open through May 13th. A person can only take the survey once. Both of the calendar options in the survey follow the traditional school model: Colleton County School Board members recently voted to keep the traditional school year calendar for the coming school year, but they did decide to implement a year-round model in the following school year.
