Public hearing set on roundabout at Canadys

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is hosting an online public comment period through December 23 for the proposed safety improvement project for the intersection of S.C. 15 (Jefferies Highway) and S.C. 61 (Augusta Highway) in Colleton County.
The proposed project will convert the current intersection to a single lane, modern roundabout. Roundabouts reduce the number of conflict points and prevent right-angle crashes, which are among the most severe types of crashes, often resulting in serious injuries and even fatalities.
The public can access the project’s website and submit comments at scdotgis.online/US15/SC61SP. The website can also be found at www.scdot.org, by clicking on the Public Involvement Portal tab, then on the Public Comment button.
The public comment period provides citizens the opportunity to review information about the proposed project, ask questions of SCDOT staff and submit comments. It also enables SCDOT to gather information from the public or any interested organization on historical or cultural resources in the area.
This intersection was selected for improvement through SCDOT’s Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). This program uses a data-driven, strategic approach to identify locations throughout the state with high crash rates or patterns and implements safety enhancements through infrastructure-related improvements. The HSIP project selection process requires an engineering study that includes an analysis of crash data, an assessment of the field conditions, and an evaluation of the effectiveness of all potential alternatives to achieve maximum safety benefits for the amount of funds invested.
If you have limited access to the internet or have questions during the public comment period, please contact SCDOT Project Manager Brett McCutchan at 803-737-1564 or email McCutchaBJ@scdot.org. Persons with disabilities who may require special accommodations should contact Betty Gray at 803-737-1395.
