Persistent Consistency

Posted

Reading the Bible through with me? Then read 2 Kings 1-3. Elisha had already been appointed as Elijah’s successor. Chapter two tells us about their travels to the place and time when Yahweh would take Elijah to heaven. In Gilgal, Elijah told Elisha to stay, but Elisha would not. He persisted in following Elijah. Three times Elijah told him to stay and wait (vv. 4 and 6.) But Elijah persisted. Persistence was a key trait for a prophet. These events might have occurred to test Elisha’s determination. Following the Lord is not for the faint of heart. It is a long journey that requires strong faith, unflinching persistence, and absolute obedience. I believe it is Eugene Peterson’s classic work on persistent faith that is titled, “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.” Every act of faithful obedience further prepares us for the next assignment from Him. Are you persistent in your faith and obedience or are you easily distracted or discouraged? The key to spiritual maturity is ever strengthening faith and deepening commitment to absolute obedience.

Let your prayer today be that you will remain persistent following the Lord Jesus and consistent in your obedience. These are challenging times in our community and nation. The need for God’s people to be the salt of the Earth and the lights of the world is urgent. Serve your King with boldness!
