Local golfer Larry Penfield was recently named Charleston Amateur Player of the Year as the Charleston Golf Week Amateur Tour wrapped up their season. Penfield also captured the Season Long Points title for Charleston Golf Week Amateur.
“This is Larry Penfield’s first year on the Charleston Golf Week Amateur Tour and he made the most of it,” said a press release from Charleston Golf Week Amateur Tour. “Penfield was in some stiff competition for the Charleston Player of the Year. There were definitely a lot of deserving candidates as Kevin Lyles, Julie Johnson, Aaron Chase, Johns Saageer, B.J. Hill all had deserving resumes; however, Penfield had two of his victories coming in Majors, which separated him from the field.

“Larry began the year with a couple of victories at some tough courses, taking home the top spot at Seabrook’s Crooked Oaks and Kiawah’s Oak Point,” the press release said. “He played steady all year and then capped off his campaign with victories in two huge majors. These majors had over 100 and 200 people respectively. Larry took home first at Florence Country Club and then he won the Grand Strand Classic up in Myrtle Beach. Congratulations on a great year to Larry and all the others in the running for Player of the year.”
Penfield was slated to participate in the 2020 Golfweek Amateur Tour Championship on Hilton Head Island last month.
