Pedestrian dies in Ruffin Road accident

A man walking on Ruffin Road was killed after being hit by a pickup on Jan. 15.

A witness said the man was walking in the eastbound lane of Ruffin Road just before Greenville Road when he was struck by the eastbound truck. The man was thrown onto the shoulder of the road.

Bystanders called 9-1-1. A private ambulance from Columbia drove up on the scene and assisted until Fire-Rescue ambulances arrived.

The patient was in cardiac arrest. He was transported to Colleton Medical Center, but later died.

The man was identified as Robert Hubbard, 73, of Walterboro. He was pronounced dead at 7:29 p.m. at Colleton Medical Center, said Coroner Richard Harvey.

The man died from neck injuries according to an autopsy on Friday, Harvey said.
