Our promise to you for National Newspaper Week

When I was approached about writing for The Press and Standard, I had reservations. I worried that newspapers are a dying form of media in an increasingly technology dependent world.

The fact remains, there is still a portion of the population in every town that prefers to receive the news as a tangible item in their hands. They may not be computer or social media savvy. They still deserve to have access to news and information in a way that’s easy for them to absorb.

I would also make the argument that newspapers hold a certain charm that digital forms of news simply can’t compete with.

There is something special about seeing yourself, your business, or your organization in print. Bookmarking a website or sharing a Facebook post just doesn’t feel the same as grabbing a pair of scissors out of the junk drawer to cut an article out of the newspaper. Having that keepsake to slip into a box or scrapbook is something that can never be replaced by digital media.

The game-winning touchdown passes, recognition of academic achievements, and all the stories of ways groups and individuals impacted the community for the better-they deserve a special place in your home. A place that will one day be smudged by dirty fingers and maybe marked by a few teardrops. A place you can pull off of the shelf and flip through with those you love when you want to revisit the memories.

The staff of The Press and Standard cares about the people in our reading area. We invite our community to come to us with the news and events you’d like to see covered.

Many of you know that the paper has been undergoing a rebuilding phase, and along with that we hope to re-establish The Press and Standard as a fair, unbiased news source that our readers can trust. We hope to cover issues and topics that are relevant and useful to you, and we hope to share in celebrating your achievements.

Most of all, we hope to earn a spot in the place you showcase your family’s memories for many years to come.

Each of us at The Press and Standard wish to extend a resounding “thank you” to those that support us on a weekly basis.

A few words from the staff on why being a part of bringing Walterboro and Colleton County’s news to you is so important to them:

“The Press and Standard publishes local stories on small victories your children accomplish to save as keepsakes to look back on for years to come. I enjoy being a part of that.”-Susan Hiott

“I love my community, and I enjoy being a part of publishing stories that show just how strong our town is.”-Tiffany Ballew

“I love graphic design! So for me, crafting an ad for someone or creating special sections/magazines for the longest standing newspaper in Colleton County are tasks that are dear to my heart. I’ve been associated with the Press for over 15 years, and I couldn’t love it any more than I do. The Press allows me to express my creativity while serving my community.”-Amanda Mosley
