Brice Herndon Funeral Chapels and Crematory

Osgood Darby Murdaugh Jr. (OD) “Bubba”, age 68, passed away on Friday January 7, 2022 after struggling with PSP for several years.

Born May 27, 1953 in Colleton County, he was the son of Matred Murdaugh Roberts and the late Osgood Darby Murdaugh, Sr.  He was blessed to be married to his wife Kathy for 42 years. OD was a graduate of Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. He was an active member of Adnah United Methodist Church serving on many committees, including chairman of the administrative board. He was a member of the Hudson Masonic Lodge and served as past master. He was a volunteer firefighter/first responder for the Islandton Fire Department. OD worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard for 20 years before working for the 1st Ranger Battalion at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah for 22 years, where he was named an Honorary Ranger. He was deployed as a civilian overseas with the Army Rangers on 13 different occasions.

OD visited numerous places in his life, but he was happiest on a tractor at home. He was always working on or patching something at the house; he’d find a way to fix most anything, a jack of all trades. OD loved his family trips to Hawaii and cruises to the Bahamas, but he was always happy to get back home to the farm.

He loved to eat (which made Mama Matred proud), but most of all he enjoyed his vanilla ice cream. Never once did he stray from vanilla. He also enjoyed watching his Westerns along with spending time with his “granddogs,” Gabby, Luna, Archer, and Penny. In his last years, he enjoyed most of his time at home with his family, they were his whole world - Kathy, Kevin, Derek, Cathy, Brittany, and Mama. Many games of UNO and Yahtzee were won and lost, and there was no shortage of Gunsmoke on TV. He always had a smile on his face when he was with his family.

OD enjoyed life to the fullest. He was always the life of the party and the last to leave. He could put a smile on anyone’s face. It didn’t matter who you were, he always greeted you with a “Hey Bo!”  OD knew everyone, and everyone knew OD. His wife and two sons were always referred to as OD’s wife and OD’s boys, and they couldn’t be prouder.

Surviving are: his wife, Katherine “Kathy” Robertson Murdaugh of Islandton; his mother, Matred Murdaugh Roberts of Islandton; his boys, Kevin Darby Murdaugh (Brittany Jones) of Islandton and Derek Neal Murdaugh and his wife Cathy of Charleston; sisters, Betty Jane Causey of Simpsonville and Jackie Smoak of Walterboro; mother-in-law, Alice “Nana” Robertson of Ridgeville; brothers-in-law, Eddie Robertson and his wife Margie of Cottageville and Timmy Robertson and his wife Pam of Ridgeville; and several nieces and nephews.
