Not all heroes wear capes

Not all heroes wear capes, some walk amongst us in suits and ties. Some are the epitome of what a servant should be or simply earn the title of humanitarian. Colleton County is fortunate to have the opportunity to spotlight the achievements of Bishop Phillip M. Taylor Sr. He may be seen in many community events lending a helping hand or offering inspirational words of wisdom, but most do not know all his achievements due to his humility.

Taylor is from San Diego, California and the son of late Bishop Lewis and late Leviticus Taylor. He notes his greatest accomplishments as being the husband of Wanda Holmes Taylor for 27 years who is truly God’s gift to him. He prides himself on being the father of three wonderful children, Emmanuel Holmes, Charese and Phillip Taylor who all contribute to families and communities in which they live.

Taylor gave credit to being raised in a tight knit family which helped to evolve him into the person he is today. He grew up in a family of giving, sharing and supporting each other. He currently aides his church and is a support to the community. Bishop Taylor stated, “Humanitarianism is being a resource, someone that is accessible, someone who feels the need to find solutions. I see myself as just Phillip. I know that it is my heart and my passion to be a resource where I can. Just having a genuine heart to help those in need, how can I give something that has a sustainable quality?”

Taylor is the recipient of the “Philip M. Taylor Sr. Humanitarian Award” from Lowcountry Community Action Agency for his outstanding services above and beyond as a board chair, as well as being a wonderful resource. Additionally, he was awarded the “Community Service Award” on behalf of the Technical College of the Lowcountry. He presently serves as Vice Chairman of Colleton County Council, Vice Chairman of the Walterboro-Colleton Airport Commission, Chairman of the Lowcountry Council of Governments Board of Directors, board member of the South Carolina Association of Counties, and Chairman of the Walterboro-Colleton Chamber of Commerce among so many other responsibilities.

More recently, Taylor has worked with leaders in Uganda, Africa and a rural area of Pakistan to provide clean, safe drinking water and personal hygiene items during his first independent international mission trip in 2019. Presently, he is vested in the mission efforts for a general care medical clinic in Kyenjojo, Uganda in 2023. A cargo container of medical equipment and supplies has been secured and is deemed for the clinic awaiting shipment upon donations.

Taylor has also been enthroned as Bishop of Saints Center Ministries to which he has launched a prayer ministry. This ministry includes his daily prayer recording broadcasted on Christian Warrior Radio each weekday and Bible InDepth Radio several times per week. His daily prayer recording is sent to thousands of people in many continents, countries and destinations.

As a message to others, Taylor said, “I sincerely encourage every individual, group, or entity to participate in giving to these worthwhile efforts to support humanity.”
