Two people were killed in a two-car crash on October 6th when their cars collided along S.C. Highway 64 (Charleston Highway) near the Neyles Community.

Witnesses called 911 at about 8:49 a.m. on Oct. 6th and reported to dispatchers that a 2010 Lexus headed eastbound crossed into the westbound lane of traffic and struck a 2009 Servpro box-style truck. The head-on collision occurred near the 8700 block of Charleston Highway.

“The impact caused substantial damage to the truck. The Lexus drove under the box knocking the rear axle off and shearing off the driver’s side and roof of the Lexus,” said Barry McRoy, director of Colleton County Fire-Rescue. “The truck came to rest in the westbound ditch, with the Lexus stopping in a yard on the eastbound side of the highway.”

Fire-Rescue found a driver and a passenger in the truck and a 48-year-old man in the Lexus. One of the people in the truck died. The driver of the Lexus also died at the scene, said McRoy.

A canine that was also strapped into a seat of the Lexus car was trapped. The dog was found in critical condition. Firefighter-paramedics used rescue tools to remove him from the wreckage and Colleton County Animal Control officers were called to the scene. The dog was taken to an animal hospital, where the died reportedly died from his injuries.

Lance Cpl. Nick Pye with the S.C. Highway Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.

According to McRoy, traffic along the highway was blocked for more than three hours.
