Colleton residents were excited to finally welcome the new Popeyes franchise Friday Oct. 16 with a ribboncutting.
Walterboro Chamber of Commerce director Jeremy Ware was on hand to welcome Popeyes to the community. “We are excited they are here,” said Ware. “We appreciate their investment in our community. It seems like it has been a long time coming, but now Popeyes is officially open and everyone can enjoy. We wish their business well and we look forward to a prosperous relationship with them.”
Serving spicy, New Orleans-style chicken and fixings, the billion-dollar Popeyes restaurants have been catering to consumers for over 40 years. And now there is one nearby to enjoy, but it hasn’t been an easy task to open the restaurant.
“We have had several set backs. First, we couldn’t pave because there was so much rain,” said Alex Rinna, director of marketing for Popeyes. “Then, our fryers were set up incorrectly, and we had to have them redone,” she said. “It has taken longer than we expected. But we are open and ready to do business and serve the community.”
Deanna Shark, the manager, said that she was very excited. “I’ve worked very hard to get here and have this opportunity,” said Shark. “I am so happy, and we have been waiting for this for a long time.”
Popeyes began in 1972 when a man named Al Copeland opened a chicken restaurant in Louisiana that didn’t do well. So, Copeland decided to change recipes and the restaurant’s name, as he introduced the New Orleans–style fried chicken that has now made the brand famous throughout the world.
