New golf cart law approved

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office asks everyone to “be safe, stay legal” in reference to the updates to South Carolina’s golf cart law. Please be advised of the following:

Section 56-2-90

Golf carts must be registered with the DMV, displaying a permit decal renewed every five years or with an address change. Registration requires proof of ownership, liability insurance, and a $5 fee.

Operators must be at least 16, have a valid driver’s license, and carry the license, registration, and proof of insurance while driving.

Unless a local ordinance states otherwise-which Colleton County does not-golf carts may only be driven during daylight on secondary roads (≤ 35 mph), within four miles of the registered address or gated community entrance and may cross higher-speed roads only at intersections.

Passengers under 12 must wear a fastened seatbelt on public roads.
