My wish for you this deer season

Posted

Sometimes “adulting” is no fun. On August 15th, I will be at work instead of loading up my deer dogs or heading out to a tree stand.

I’ll be heading out soon, when duty (and dog food money) doesn’t call. The older I get, the more I realize we have a mighty long deer season and I have plenty of time to catch up. In the meantime, I want to share my wishes for each of you this deer season.

I hope you never forget that we can enjoy a hunt even when we leave with an empty tailgate. Enjoy nature. Take in the beauty of our area-the blackwater, saw palmettos, and diverse wildlife contained within.

Take pleasure in a reprieve from work or duties at home. Don’t let hunting become another “job.” Use it as a form of relaxation.

Spend quality time with those you love in the field now and then. Take your child or your daddy/Grandaddy hunting with you. One day the memories will mean more to you than any mount on your wall.

Be a good steward of the sports we love. Follow the rules, and leave things as you found them. Give nobody that wants to take our passions from us a reason to find fault. Hunters are at the heart of conservation-do your part to continue that tradition.

Recognize that what we get to do is a privilege, not a right. Day by day, others try to take that privilege from us. Savor each hunt like it may be your last.

Lastly, I encourage you to give thanks to the Lord for every opportunity you get to head into the woods. How blessed are we to have such a deep connection to his creation?

Sending best wishes for a safe and enjoyable season.
