Ms. Mary Ruth Kimbrel, 88, of Walterboro, entered into rest eternal Wednesday evening, September 21, 2022, at Pruitt Health Care in Walterboro.

Born July 17, 1934, in Branchville, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Elvester Vance “E.V.” Kimbrel and the late Nell Wethington Kimbrel.   Ruth retired from the General Services Department of the Pentagon which provided service to all branches of our United States Military except for the Department of the Army.  She was a longtime member of Saint Jude’s Church in Walterboro.  In her younger years, Ruth was very much the athlete having excelled in running.  In the later years of her life, following her work career and eventual retirement, she enjoyed gardening and bird watching. 

Surviving are: a daughter, Cynthia Hudson Lucas and her husband Charles of Walterboro; and a sister, Myrna Kimbrel Hanlon of Charleston.   There are two grandchildren, Heather Lucas Lambros and her husband Nicholas of Dutch Island near Savannah, Georgia and Holly Lucas Mardell and her husband Matthew of Walterboro; six great grandchildren, Madison Leigh Lucas, Lucas Lambros, Sophia Lambros, Landon Lambros, Townsend Mardell, and Evangeline Clare Mardell; and two nephews and a niece as well as a host of great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, E. V. Kimbrel, Jr. and Clarence Carlton “Sam” Kimbrel; and a sister, Helen Kimbrel Avant. 

The family is extremely grateful to many who provided excellent care to Ruth during her illness.  The staff of Magnolias in Walterboro as well as Pruitt Health Care were exceptional in the love and dedication, they provided along with her nurses, Heather Delong and Amy Covington. 

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed to: Saint Jude’s Church, 907 Wichman Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 o’clock Thursday morning, September 29, 2022, from the Kimbrel Mausoleum located on the grounds of Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro.   The Reverend Newman Lawrence, Rector.
