Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Polk Bryant, age 90, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2021, at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Fort Mill on Saturday, July 10. The Celebration of Life will be held immediately after with the Rev. Karen H. Radcliff officiating. Burial will follow at Unity Cemetery in Fort Mill.

Born in Rice Patch, S.C., Mrs. Bryant was a daughter of the late Ernest Henry Polk and Mary Trail Polk. She received her bachelor’s degree from Columbia College. Mrs. Bryant began her teaching career in the Columbia County School System for several years. After moving to Fort Mill, she spent the remainder of her 35-year career teaching second grade at Fort Mill Elementary.

She was active through the years in many groups, including the Fort Mill Lions Club, Fort Mill Garden Club, the Clara Phillips Circle, the St. John’s UMC choir, and Nation Ford DAR.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, John Bryant in 2007, her brother, Ernest F. Polk, Sr. in 2007, and her sister, Eunice P. Jones in 2014.

Surviving are her nephew, Ernest F. Polk, Jr.; her niece, Dr. Nancy McNair; her great-niece, Marie and Gertjan van Roekel; her great-nephews, Ernest and Alexandria Polk, and six great-great-nephews and -nieces.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the following people for being true angels in ensuring she lived an independent life until the very end: Jo Ann Kane, Leslie and Marc Howie, Brenda Stowe, Mark and Mandy Carter, Mark Hause, Catherine D’Amore, and Chris Stanke.
