Margaret Thomas Montjoy

Brice Herndon, Funeral Chapels and Crematory

Margaret Thomas Montjoy, 88, of Round O, went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 2, 2020, after a short battle with congestive heart failure. She was born January 20, 1932 in Fauquier County, Va. to Elizabeth McGuinn Bean.

Margaret and her sister, Helen, were raised in Catharpin, Va. As children, they attended Sudley United Methodist Church in Manassas, where Margaret was baptized into the Methodist Faith.  During WWII, the family moved to the Navy Yard in Charleston, S.C., where Margaret graduated from Bill Tillman School, before attending Chicora and Saint Johns high schools. She also met the love of her life, Lawrence Montjoy, while living near the Navy Yard in Charleston.

After the war, Margaret and her family relocated back to Northern Virginia. Desperately missing his love, Mr. Montjoy caught a train to retrieve Miss Thomas from Nokesville, Va. where she’d just began her studies at Brentsville District High School.  They were married in the fall of 1947 in Manassas, Va. and moved back to his family homeplace at Enoree, S.C.

The new Mrs. Montjoy took her role as wife and community member seriously, getting involved in the local church, Lanford Baptist Church, immediately upon arrival. She was baptized into the Baptist Faith soon thereafter.  In 1954, the Montjoys moved to the Driggers Crossroads Community just outside of Round O, S.C. They remained here the rest of their lives. They immediately joined Bedon Baptist Church, where Mrs. Montjoy remained a devoted and active member, encouraging others there, until her last days.

Over the years, there was very little Margaret wouldn’t do to serve her Lord. She worked VBS for many years, served in the choir for more than 50 years, served as Discipleship Training Director, taught the preschool Sunday School class, was a Sunday School Secretary, participated in Live Nativities, and was well known for her mandarin orange salad at every church social.

Mrs. Montjoy was well known on East Washington Street in Walterboro, where she spent more than 50 years as a Sales Lady at Warshaw’s and Hayes Jewelry. She did not know a stranger in Downtown Walterboro. Rich or poor, black or white, she’d call you a friend if you called her yours. She worked until she was 82, at which time she chose to retire to take road trips up and down the east coast with her youngest granddaughter.

In addition to her youngest granddaughter, Ana Montjoy, of the home; she also leaves behind a daughter, Susan Montjoy, of Walterboro; and a beloved sister, Helen Thomas Phipps, of Nokesville, Va. She also leaves behind Margie Nettles and her partner, Mickey Ribas of Walterboro, both of whom she loved like her own children. In addition, she leaves behind her ‘Lowcountry Granddaughter,’ Ashley Dockins Moore (Nicholas) and their children Penelope and Camilla, of Lugoff, S.C.  As an active member of Bedon Baptist Church, she also leaves behind many dear friends, of whom she thought the world, within the congregation.

Mrs. Montjoy also leaves behind three older grandchildren, Melinda (Edward) Risher, Sara (Allen) Hiers, and Andy Montjoy. There are nine great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. She leaves behind a host of beloved nieces and nephews all over Virginia and South Carolina, particularly Leland (Pat) Phipps, of Round Hill, Va.; Miriam (Thomas) Humphries, Jim Driggers, and Marie (Paul) Ackerman, all of Round O, S.C.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lawrence Earl Montjoy, Sr. and by her son, Lawrence Earl Montjoy, Jr(Larry). She was also preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Bean Anderson.

The family would like to thank Amedysis Hospice, particularly Heather DeLong and Kristen King, for their efforts of comfort during Mrs. Montjoy’s final weeks. Your tender loving care cannot be encapsulated.

In consideration of the extraordinary circumstances associated with the Coronavirus, the family will hold a private graveside funeral service for Mrs. Margaret at Bedon Baptist Church Cemetery.
