A 28-year-old man died from injuries received in a single-car wreck at the intersection of Quail Drive and Partridge Trail on Sunday Aug. 16.

The accident was discovered at 2:06 a.m. and reported to 9-1-1.

Sheriff’s office deputies and Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later to find a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis overturned on Partridge Trail at the entrance to the Quail Creek Subdivision. Apparently, the vehicle was traveling northbound when it left the road, entered the ditch and struck a concrete culvert.

The unrestrained driver was partially ejected and trapped in the wreckage. Firefighter-paramedics found the man had no signs of life and notified the Colleton County Coroner’s Office.

Crews stabilized the vehicle, then used high pressure air bags to lift the car and hydraulic cutters to remove a portion of the door to free Joseph Thomas Stanley, 28, of Walterboro. Deputy Coroner Richard Carter is investigating, but said the preliminary cause of death was head trauma.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Quail Drive was blocked for two hours until the accident was cleared.
