An individual wanted in connection with the death of a Long County, Ga., sheriff’s deputy was taken into custody Jan. 30 in Walterboro.

The United States Marshal Service, the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, and the Walterboro Police Department wrapped up a nearly week-long operation Thursday night that resulted in the arrest of Jerry Johnathan Englum, 22, of Ridgeland.

Englum was arrested on an active warrant for vehicular homicide that was issued by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Sources state that Englum was the operator of a vehicle that led authorities on a pursuit that started in Ludowici, Ga., in the early morning hours of Jan. 23.

Deputy Shelton Whiteman, 44, of the Long County Sheriff’s Office, Ga., was assisting the Ludowici police officer when his patrol vehicle left the roadway and collided with several trees. Deputy Whitman was transported to the Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Englum was arrested without incident and transported to the Colleton County Detention Center.

He will remain in custody until extradition procedures are completed for his transfer to GBI agents.
