Making masks for those at risk

Nancy Crosby of Walterboro had never really sewed before. But when the COVID-19 reached Colleton County, she wanted to do something to help.

To date, she’s made over 600 face masks, most donated to the elderly, school teachers, cancer survivors, the Walterboro Post Office employees and others in high risk of catching the virus.

Crosby took a sewing class in school many years ago. “That’s the last time I sewed,” she said. “I made one for myself, then people wanted them, so I just started.

“I didn’t know I could sew — the pattern is harder than some. It’s quite time-consuming. You’ve got to cut it out, sew it, iron it, sew it again and sew on elastic,” she said.

But two of her four children have been helping with the prep, making things easier, especially since Crosby is still working at her job as a property manager.

The vast majority of the masks Crosby has given away, but she’s sold a few for $4 each to raise money to buy more materials.

“I wish I could be like others and donate all of them, but I need money to buy materials and I just got too many orders to give them all away,” she said. She’s had some material donated, but she’s now almost out of elastic. So she’s hoping to get back in business soon.

Anyone who wants a mask can message Crosby on Facebook.
