Mr. Luther Eugene “Gene” Hiers, husband of Miriam Padgett Hiers, passed away Thursday April 8, 2021 at his home with his family by his side, under hospice care.  He was 81.

Gene was born in Colleton County June 6, 1939 a son of the late Martin Luther Hiers and Hazel Victoria Priester Hiers.  He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, and was well known as the manager of the former Western Sizzlin Restaurant and The Speedy Express in Walterboro.  Gene based every aspect of his life on his walk with Christ, and everyone he came into contact with could see the presence of the Lord in him.  He was a true Christian man, and even at the very end of his life, did not want anyone to worry about him because he knew he would soon be in the hands of his savior. Gene wanted all of his family and friends to know that he loved them, but "Jesus loved them more".

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Gene Hiers of Columbia, Victoria Hiers of Walterboro, and Judy H. Williams (Ken) of Sweetwater, TN.  He has two step-children, Amy DeLong (Ricky) and Marion Sauls (Teresa), as well as four grandchildren.  Gene has a sister, Rhoda Hiers Gooch, and a host of extended family to include nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, and step-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his step-grandmother Dolly Stone.  In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his daughter Brenda Hiers Bailey, by his brother William Hiers, and by the mother of his children Doris Moore Hiers.

In accordance with Gene’s wishes, a private funeral service and burial was held. In lieu of flowers, the he requested that memorials be made in his honor to either The Guideons International or to the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home.  Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro was in charge of arrangements
