A 25-year-old Colleton County woman died from injuries she received in a single vehicle wreck on I-95 near the 65-mile marker northbound Saturday May 23 at 7:02 p.m.

The woman was operating a Dodge Dakota pickup, traveling northbound on I-95, when she lost control, crossed both lanes of the highway and struck the side of the bridge over Weans Road. The vehicle then crossed back over both lanes and overturned several times in the median before landing on the roof against the guardrail on the southbound side of the highway.

Neither of the two occupants in the truck was wearing a seatbelt. The woman was ejected and found near the edge of the median next to the southbound lanes of the highway. Callers to 9-1-1 reported she was unconscious. The male occupant received non-life threatening traumatic injuries and was able to crawl out of the truck on his own. The vehicle receive heavy damage.

Several people stopped to render aid. Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later and began providing care to the critically injured woman. A medical helicopter was requested and a land zone was established on the interstate; however, the patient went into cardiac arrest and was transported by ambulance to Colleton Medical Center with additional staff assisting with her care.

The emergency department staff worked diligently on the patient but Shelby Taylor White, 25, of Walterboro did not survive her injuries. She died of multiple trauma, said Deputy Coroner Wayne Walker.

The male occupant was transported to Colleton Medical Center in stable condition by ambulance.

Both sides of the interstate were down to a single lane for nearly two hours while the S.C. Highway Patrol conducted its investigation.
