A Walterboro woman was saved from a house fire after her alarm company notified local authorities that smoke was filling the residence.

Colleton County 911-emergency dispatchers were first notified of the residential smoke alarm at about 3 p.m. on Feb. 17th. While responding to the Sidneys Road residence, the security/alarm company made a second 911-call, saying that they could see smoke filling the inside of the residence.

“You could smell it from the yard,” said Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy.

Firefighters-paramedics forced their way into the house through the front door and found the woman unconscious, lying on the floor of the kitchen. According to McRoy, the woman was carried out of the house and into an ambulance, where she was treated by firefighter-paramedics. The woman regained consciousness after about 20 minutes and refused further medical care.

Meanwhile, additional firefighter-paramedics searched the house and found two dogs inside the house. They were not injured.

“It appears the woman was cooking when she suffered an emergency that rendered her unconscious,” said McRoy.

Firefighters used a large, industrial-style fan to pull smoke from the house. The fire was contained to the oven and did not spread to any part of the house.
