Two Walterboro men were killed on Saturday in an early-afternoon car crash.

Patrick Carroll, 54, and James Jackson, 60, of Walterboro, both died on the scene as a result of the crash, according to Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey.

The crash occurred near Robertson Boulevard near the Colleton County Recycling Center at about 3:56 p.m. on Saturday, August 27th.

According to Master Trooper Brian Lee with the S.C. Highway Patrol, both Carroll and Jackson were the drivers of the two vehicles involved. No other people were reported as being involved in the collision.

Lee said the 2000 GMC was traveling west on Highway 64 (Robertson Boulevard) and the Ford F-150 was traveling east when the driver of the GMC drove left of the center lane and struck the Ford pickup truck.

Both drivers were unrestrained, meaning neither men were wearing a seat belt. Both men were ejected from their vehicles.

“A witness was on the phone with 9-1-1 reporting one of the vehicles for erratic driving when the pickup went left of the center line and struck another pickup truck head-on. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage,” said Barry McRoy, chief of Colleton County Fire-Rescue (CCFR). Colleton County Fire-Rescue is the emergency agency that responded to the scene.

McRoy said traffic on Robertson Boulevard, near the Colleton County Recycling Center, was closed for nearly three hours while state and County officials investigated the crash.

As of the press deadline, the S.C. Highway Patrol was still investigating this fatal collision.
