This month’s spotlight is on Blue Moon Towing. Jamie Carroll is the owner and has been towing for five years. He started out working for his brother-in-law part time learning the trade at his tow company. Carroll was working full time as a mechanic at Bosch but as the tow business kept growing. He decided to buy a truck and start his own business. Like a lot of small business owners he wanted to work for himself, “I wanted to do something else. I didn’t want to keep working for somebody else.
Currently Blue Moon Towing has 3 trucks based in Cottageville. He is exclusively a tow company but there is the possibility of opening a shop in the future. With his mechanics background this would be a natural progression. He is also looking to base in Walterboro in the near future.
Carroll has been married to Dana for eight and a half years and has two daughters, Cooper and Haley, one at high school, one in middle school. The oldest one is in color guard for the band of blue, and the youngest one plays softball.
Carroll’s trucks are very recognizable with the Moon and Wolf Logo. Two of the trucks are black but the 3rd is yellow with the logo. Carroll tells the story behind it, “We started with a black truck, our plan was to stick with nothing but black trucks because our logo just works with it. We had to have a new truck and there was no waiting. The only truck available was yellow.
My youngest daughter’s favorite cartoon growing up was always Curious George, it worked out and was able to put Curious George on the side of the truck.” The combination of the logo and the character make a striking combination.
The logo can also be seen traveling with the Band of Blue, Carroll explains, “We got the Good Friendship Award from the Band of Blue. They had a meeting early in the season about wanting to have their equipment truck wrapped. They were going to Mardi Gras this past year, and when they pull up to perform, we want them to look like the band that they are, a top tier band.” Blue Moon towing funded wrapping the truck and the Blue Moon Logo can be seen on the back of the truck.
Blue Moon Towing is primarily operating in lower South Carolina but will travel were needed. He has transported a number of different vehicles with his favorite being his first tow a 1932 Model T.
Carroll says, “You have some type of automotive knowledge to avoid doing more damage to the vehicle you are towing.”
Towing can be a dangerous profession and he would like to remind drivers that when they see a wrecker on the side of the road, move over, and slow down. It’s the law in South Carolina.
Carroll says he enjoys meeting people, “I love dealing with people, some are just the sweetest people you’ll ever meet in your life.”
