LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor:

How much taxpayer money did Colleton County and the State of South Carolina lose when they gave tax credits and economic grants to Sarla flex Performance Fibers, LLC to re-develop the old J.P. Stevens Manufacturing facility in 2012-2013?

The company promised to spur the “creation of high-quality jobs while transforming a severely distressed community.” It anticipated the hiring of 100-150 individuals by the end of 2014.

It was in operation for only a short time, and I don’t think it ever reached full capacity. The company has now been closed for at least four or more years and the property is now up for sale. Nothing was reported in the news, so what happened?

Sarla Flex received $13.8 million in New Market Tax Credit financing for a facility that never worked out. Looks like a scam to me!

This was part of County Council’s plans for developing the Industrial area. The Council should provide answers.

Sincerely,

Marshall Clark
