PRESS RELEASE - The USC Salkehatchie volleyball team defeated Denmark Tech in its season opener, winning the match 3 – 1. Salkehatchie came out strong in the first set with a 25 – 13 win before losing the second set 16 – 25. The Indians bounced back in the last two sets, defeating Tech 25 -13 and 25 – 14.

Tamyra Hunt finished the match with 19 kills and 9 solo blocks. Heavin Dagin had 7 kills, while Jarelli Mazzolli and Imani Young tacked on another 4 and 3, respectively. Mazzolli also had a total of 29 assists.

Defensively, the team played well with Jessica Fluharty leading the team with 31 digs.

Offensively, Hunt and Mazzolli lead Salkehatchie with 4 ace serves each.

The win was Dani Aquino’s first as head coach for USC Salkehatchie who said that the win was the culmination of a preseason full of hard work, dedication, focus and intensive training.

“Having no doubts, the team came out strong in the first set and encountered a seamless victory. The second set proved more difficult, challenging the girls to find new ways of communicating and working together. But after a reset and some refocusing, they came back and won the third and fourth sets,” Aquino said.

“The way they were able to overcome their weaknesses and make necessary changes within the game proved they are the epitome of the direction I'm going with this program. I am proud of the level they competed at and am looking forward to seeing how they take on our future competitors."

Salkehatchie’s next match will be at USC Lancaster on September 9 in Greenville.
