The Colleton Prep Lady Hawk Tennis season came to an end following a round one loss in the SCISA AA State Tennis against Carolina Academy on October 13 on the road.
The Lady Hawks fell 5-1 in the match with No. 2 Becca Martin earning the win against a previously undefeated opponent. Colleton Prep will return most of its roster next season as they had one senior, Rianna Bailey, who played in the No. 1 spot.
“When first asked why I was coaching high school girl’s tennis, my answer was because the parents asked so many times that I finally agreed to one season,” said Coach Ladson Fishburne. “Our first match was in Cayce against Orangeburg Prep where we won 8-1. Two girls were down 1-5 in the second set and both came back to win that set 7-5. From day one, the girls showed me that they were competitive and would play hard until the match was over. I knew after that match that it was going to be a great season.
“Fast forwarding to the final match of the season, we played an undefeated Carolina Academy,” said Fishburne. “I never saw fear in the girl’s eyes as they warmed up and began their match. They were cool, calm and collected. The final scores do not reflect how hard they played; in fact, it was the best tennis that I have watched them play all season. Long story short, I now coach high school girls’ tennis because our match is not over, that was just the first set. See you next year Lady Hawks.”
