Lady Cougars sweep four games on the week

By CINDY CROSBY Cindyc4@yahoo.com The Colleton County Lady Cougar Softball team improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in Region VII-AAAA after a four-game sweep last week.

The Lady Cougars earned conference wins over Beaufort High School (16-0, 9-2) and Bluffton High School (12-4) and a non-region game over Cane Bay (12-3). The Lady Cougars were slated to face May River High School this week to determine the Region VII-AAAA title. In the win over Beaufort High School Monday April 19 on the road, senior Whitney Weathers made her presence known in the circle and at the plate. Weathers allowed no runs on three hits, striking out nine in the run-rule shortened game. She was perfect at the plate, going 4-4 (triple, double, grand slam, single) with 10-RBI’s and scoring three times. Shandi Brown was 3-3 with an RBI and scored four times. Bailey Cox, Makayla Chisolm, Jordan Slocum, Shamorie Overton and Maggie Kennedy recorded a hit each in the game.

Against the Eagles in game two of the series played Wednesday April 21 (home), Weathers earned the win allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out 12 and issuing one walk across seven innings. The Lady Cougars had 13 hits in the game, with Chisolm, Weathers, Makenzie Pellum and Overton recording multiple hits. Chisolm was 3-4, scoring twice. Brown, Cox, Sydney Howard, and Slocum each had a hit. The Lady Cougars faced Hilton Head High School Thursday April 22 in a game postponed from earlier in April. Weathers allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and struck out 11 across seven innings. Colleton County recorded 12 hits in the game with Brown, Cox, Weathers, Howard (homerun), Chisolm and Kennedy having multiple hits. Weathers earned her fourth win of the week in the circle against Cane Bay Friday April 23 on the road, allowing no earned runs on seven hits, striking out four and issuing a single walk. Chisolm was 3-4 with 5-RBI’s and scored once. Brown was 3-4 with an RBI and Weathers was 3-5. Howard was 2-5 with an RBI and scored three times. Cox, Pellum and Kennedy each had a hit. The Lady Cougars were slated to face May River High School in a two-game series this week to determine the fate of the Region VII-AAAA title.
