The Lady Cougars showed their mettle in an overtime battle against Region VIII-AAAAA Ashley Ridge High School Wednesday Dec. 18. Although Colleton County (5-3) came up short 32-30, they gained some under-pressure court experience that can only improve their chances heading into their region schedule in January.
Colleton County also picked up a dominating win over Battery Creek (64-36) and lost a close game to Wade Hampton (42-40) in the days before Christmas.
Against Wade Hampton on Monday Dec. 16, Omari Kirkland led the Lady Cougars scoring 16 points. Ashley Bowman chipped in 10 points.
Kirkland again led Colleton County scoring 13 points in the overtime loss to the Swamp Foxes. Ja’Nay McClain and Makayla Chisolm each added 6 points on the boards.
In the win over Battery Creek, Kirkland scored 23 points and Jade Frazier added 10 points. Other scoring included Chisolm 9, Zy’Aire Johnson 7, Ashley Bowman 4, McClain 4, Tiffany North 4, Ashley Savage 2, Donae Bowens 2.
“Overall, I’m very pleased with the first half of the season,” said Coach Perry Smalls. “Wade Hampton brought their best game and everything they threw up fell for them. We just didn’t make the baskets when we should have. Against Ashley Ridge, they have two dominating players in the middle, but I felt like we played well against them. We just need all of our players to show up and play each and every game.
“We played very well against Battery Creek,” said Smalls. “I’m looking forward to the second half of the season and region play.”
